As you enter to the arena of teaching, you need to
be exposed in various school related activities such as doing reports, writing
reflections & reaction papers and various projects that signify student
understanding about the subject matter being discusses. There are times that
students have fear in this unending g outputs that are required by the teacher.
In my personal experience in my practice teaching, I saw how students’
dedication in making their outputs not only get higher grade but also it
reflects their personality. In my stay here, I exposed my students in various
projects, writing activities and even performance task to measure the level of
their understanding about the subject matter. The first project I gave to them
was a poster about Globalization. As of their submitted output, I am satisfied
with their works because they exert extra efforts just to produce good output.
Their outputs are quite colorful and designed properly and I think they
prepared for that. Every time I am done with our discussion, I’m instructing
them to write their reflection about a certain issue that is related to the
topic I had discussed. I always instruct them to create a 5 paragraph essays
that reflects their point of views and thoughts about a certain issue. Of
course I assure that their outputs will contemplate the subject being discussed
or certain issues that has relation to the topic since our subject is
Contemporary Issues. It is my way to check if they able to cope up with the
discussion. I saw to their outputs that they have varied ideas that they can’t
express orally. I also realized that they are sounder in writing because in the
discussion, few students are responding particularly to some students in lower
grades. But when I gave them writing activities and output, they almost
complete the five paragraph essay and this is the indicator that they have
really good in writing.
Also, I gave them performance task like creating a
documentary about the things that manifest globalization. Even we are located
quite far from urban areas, they manage to create an awesome manifestation of
globalization by simply capturing some establishments in our community. In
terms of the process of creating it and to their final output, I see their
potential in editing and using various applications in video editing. It is a
good indicator that they are really integrating technology in their learning
process. In Grade 8A which I also handled, they create a mini exhibit about
Renaissance Period using only cut pictures and recyclable materials such as
used paper, cartons, paste boards and cardboards. They only decorated the room
that looks like an exhibit and after they prepare it, they are the one who
discussed it to their classmates. I see that in their younger years, they can
able to create a project like that and I see their creativity and active
participation to our classroom activities.
Their works and outputs really impress me as a
student teacher and it made me think that all of them have hidden talents. It
is not seen sometimes because there are times that the classroom scenario is
teacher-centered which the students have no chance to express themselves. And
this talent (if it is developed) will greatly help them to be someone in the
future. Their works reflects what kind of personality they have and in the
matter of fact, they have good output and to promote fairness and justness, I
graded them according to their work using a rubric that I prepared whenever
they have outputs or performance task. I also witnessed that they really
enjoying in dealing to the activities I gave to them because they have the
chance to socialize with their classmates. Finally, my only feedback to their
works are they are still very good because of their creativeness and their
heart in what they are doing. And I observed that dealing with these activities
are not a fear for them instead it is their way to feel belonging to the
classroom by only showcasing their hidden talents that they didn’t shown in
classroom teaching.
