Teaching Social Studies
in secondary is very hard thing to do. Simply, students are easily getting
bored when always listening as the teacher discusses the everyday lesson. In
this stage of their educational path, they are dealing with knowing the history
of Asia where they are belong (Asean Studies), the history of the world (World
History), how the economy works (Economics) and different issues happening
nowadays (Contemporary Issues). Acquiring all of this is challenge for the
students and also to the teachers. It is not easy to instill to the minds of
every learner this knowledge. But as part of the completion of the learning
process, it must teach very well to the students. Social studies as they always
say is a boring subject. But the reality of life is in studying this subject
matter. We can able to understand the present and the future by simply looking
back to our distant past. Social Studies subject is everything. It is
integrated in our daily life. It includes us-humans that create our own history
and that’s the reason while we are unexceptional to the other creation of our
Creator. So, the major role and goal of teacher like me is to impart knowledge
to the students not only the content itself but also the lesson that we may
retrieved in studying it. English subject will teach you how to speak English
fluently. Mathematics will make you realize to love numbers that are very
essential to humans. But Social Studies will teach you how to be humane by
acquiring all the lessons teach by our distant past and the events happening
nowadays.
Every Social Studies teacher is quite problematic in
teaching the subject because of its broad scope. As a teacher in the future, I
will be a teacher not only relying in its content but also to the important
lesson that can bring to my students that they can use in facing their daily
lives. I may a hypocrite if I say that I can change my student perspective by
studying it but I will try my very best to make this subject as their weapon to
change the world. I will also improve their socialization aspect as I teach the
subject by engaging them to various exciting activities that may bring
knowledge to them and they can acquire important philosophy that they can use
in their daily life. Being a teacher is both challenge and opportunity to be a
better one because of the diversity of every learner inside the classroom
setting. This diversity challenged me more to become a fair and just teacher in
the future. I will become more sensitive in dealing and teaching the subject
for me to become a teacher in heart. Every student has the ability to become
someone in the future and it will only possible by letting them to appreciate
the beauty of Social Studies.
